I can’t stress how important good lighting is in a home. No matter how many beautiful pieces you put in a space, if you have poor lighting or improper proportions of your fixtures, you run the risk of throwing off your whole design scheme. I love to mix affordable options with high-end pieces, but more often than not if the budget allows I will splurge a little more on lighting. Trust me- It makes all the difference.
I have my tried and true sources for all things design, and I often find myself choosing Currey & Company again and again. It might be the impeccable attention to detail, the on point trends or timeless lines, but more than anything else it’s the craftsmanship and quality that makes Currey & Company a no-brainer when it comes to picking the right piece. I can truly say there hasn’t been a time when I couldn’t find that perfect pendant, lamp or chandelier.
Below our my favorite recent picks for lighting from Currey & Company. If you are interested in any of these pieces let me know (Contact me here).
Alright, commence the drooling.
Don’t worry- it’s a no-judgement zone here at AWD. A little slobber never hurt anyone.
You don’t need an expensive remodel to make your master bathroom feel luxurious and spa-like. If you are like me I consider my bath time to be my sacred space, as in “Mommy needs a time out, unless the house is on fire, don’t knock.” I wanted to share with you a few ways I have transformed my master bath in to a relaxing oasis.
BUY THE GOOD TOWELS
Don’t skimp when it comes to towels. They may feel fine in the store, but get them home and a few washes later you are left with some sandpaper and hanging strings. Investing in good towels means not having to replace them every six months. The #1 reason to purchase a quality towel? The feel and absorption. Drying takes place quickly, and you certainly won’t be exfoliating after your bath (leave that for the loofah).
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LIGHTING, BABY
We all know fabulous lighting can make a difference in a dressing room, sometimes meaning you go home in tears instead of that dress you thought was going to look smashing. Don’t sell yourself short when it comes to your bathroom lighting. I recommend staying under a 45watt bulb, and keep the lighting soft. Have a place with natural light to put your makeup on, but keep your bathroom for relaxing and unwinding after a long day. You aren’t doing surgery in there, so leave the high beams for the doctor’s office.
BRING IN THE PERSONAL ITEMS
It’s your retreat, so use it as such. If you have a romantic picture of you and your loved one here is the place to hang it. I love the use of beautiful black and whites with a wide mat and pretty frame. Sentimental items, maybe even a love letter framed, can be great additions to your master bath that make it feel luxurious and personal.
Everything in my master bath is stored neatly and tucked away in its rightful spot. The house can be chaotic, but coming into your sacred space should feel organized and well thought-out. Keep beautiful wicker baskets to store your toilet paper, and clear stackable units that give your makeup collection a sleek appearance.
What ways have you found that help turn your master bath into your own relaxing oasis?
Is there anything more beautiful than driving into a development with lush pastures and tall silos that take you back to a slower time? Now take that image and imagine the landscape dotted with magnificent homes that are tucked into wooded tree filled lots. Homes that really deserve a fairytale story all on their own. This was the setting of Homearama, the 2015 festival of showcase homes in the picturesque development of Cheval, an equestrian lifestyle community unlike any other in our area.
You know that feeling when you walk into a home and you instantly can’t control your eyes. You bounce from beautiful detail to beautiful detail and you just can’t seem to absorb all the gorgeousness before you?
You know the feeling… that would be my experience in the design showcase home of New Old, custom home builders that just exude the type of loveliness that good friends are made of- except these friends build some of the most beautiful homes you may have ever laid eyes on. See the beautiful Mary Ludemann below- she is one part of the fabulous equation. Along with husband extraordinaire Troy, they build impeccable homes with the perfect blend of “old and new”- truly works of art.
I often find that the loft space in a home is one of the last areas to be decorated, if at all. It normally becomes a hodge podge of left over furniture, lamps, and artwork that never really found a home anywhere else. The tragedy is that now more and more, these loft spaces are centrally located upstairs, with direct access to hallways and bedrooms. It’s a great place for the kiddos games and toys, however don’t forget you don’t want to walk up the stairs or past the loft and become overcome with a wave of anxiety. Here are three fixes to change a dull, chaotic loft into a space you want to not only show off, but relax in as well.
1) ADD A TEXTURED WALL
A textured wall is a great way to add character to your loft. If you want a balance of sophistication and kid friendly, yet know that new furniture and sticky fingers are just not going to mix, try thinking out of the box with a great textured wall. I love a beautiful grass cloth. It’s neutral to go with just about any color, and just enough sheen and texture to give it a glamorous feel. When all the toys are put away at the end of a long day, having a room that can be both friendly to your little ones and cozy for you can be worth it many times over.
2) UPDATE YOUR FLOOR RUG
Quickest way to add wow to your room other than a new wall covering or paint? Look no further than below your feet. A new rug can bring so much interest to a room, and often times can be the only thing you need to change in order to really warm up your space. Remember your new addition should fit your family’s lifestyle. In other words, if you have kids keep in mind you should choose a fiber that will be easy to clean… think polypropylene or synthetic. Although I love a beautiful wool or chenille rug like any other gal, it’s important to remember your family loft is probably not the best place for an investment piece. Wayfair has a great rug material guide that can help you choose the right fit for you.
If within budget, I highly recommend skipping the TV console and going straight to built-ins. These storage titans are perfect for a busy family and add mega watts of charm to your loft. If your space doubles as a movie room and play area, the built-ins allow for easy hide away storage of toys and other electronic gadgets. I also love the way this shelving option gives you creative freedom to really style your room with just the right accent pieces, high out of reach from little hands.
